Remarkable contribution for safety in high-rise buildings

The latest iku®windows developments, besides integrated self-cleaning, meet the need of today’s
security concepts for high-rise buildings – Safe evacuation of people in case of disaster with
iku®windows evacuation unit – Congresses in Jordan and Austrian dealt with these security topics
among other issues

The Austrian based company iku®windows was invited to speak about its intelligent façade solutions
including latest developments - the maintenance & evacuation unit - at the 4th architectural conference
in Amman, Jordan and at “Fassadentage” in Salzburg, Austria.

4th architectural conference - First High-rise Building Conference & Exhibition in Amman
The conference held mid of June for three days, aimed for achieving a total and comprehensive
understanding and analysis of high-rise buildings. Renowned speakers from all over the world informed
the specialised audience about challenges, as well as about behavioural and social dimensions of
growing cities, where high-rise buildings became major phenomena.

Within this major topic, security measures in high-rise buildings were discussed. A total security concept
contains several issues, beginning with communication, prevention and self protection, or such
logistical measures like developing a water strategy for high-rise buildings.

Monika and Julius Thurnher spoke about maintenance and safety issues in the curtain wall. The concept
of iku®windows covers security not only for the tenants but also for the maintenance people. The self-
cleaning façade system works by the touch of a button and the maintenance system is an important
addition in the security concept of a building. Besides maintenance, iku®windows is able to offer an
appropriate instrument in the frame of evacuation plans in high-rise buildings: The iku®windows
evacuation unit. These cutting edge façade technologies attracted high interest by the audience.

1th Exhibition and academy of façade construction - “Fassadentage” in Salzburg
In cooperation with one of the leading international glass fabricators ”Pilkington”, this conference for
façade construction took place the first time in Austria in the end of June. The “Facade Academy” was
the meeting point for information transfer and networking. During two days architects, engineers and
developers discussed about possibilities and visions in current façade technology. Several topics were
discussed among the experts.

“Façades deliver messages”, was the main statement in the presentation of Monika Thurnher. She
pointed out that only a clean façade could transport a positive image of its owners and tenants.
Photovoltaic, lightening and advertising in the facade have to be clean to work effective. The intelligent
self-cleaning systems of iku®windows is well known already in the sector of façade business, so the
latest developments, the maintenance & evacuation units of iku®windows in connection with security
concepts of high-rise buildings, were therefore highlighted.
iku®windows: Top priority for safety in high-rise buildings
iku®windows façade systems basically allow to abandon traditional BMU systems for the maintenance
of the façade. The cleaning is possible just by the touch of a button, the maintenance of the cleaning
system can be done from the inside and even the changing of broken glass panels is possible from
inside. With the newly developed iku®windows maintenance unit, also large and heavy glass panes,
which no longer could be carried in an elevator inside the building, can be transported easily outside to
any place in the façade. There are no risks imposed as with traditional BMU’s.

How the system works: A hamper is raised with a steel rope, driven by a motor. An additional sliding
module, which is running within the vertical facade profiles, keeps the hamper close to the façade and
ensures absolute safety. It can be placed at the roof of the building or in the service floor.
The flexibility of this unit allows the use of it at any place in the façade.
A specially developed evacuation unit, based on the same principal, can be used for the transport of up
to eight persons, depending on its size. Similar to emergency exits in aircrafts, so called “evacuation
points” can be set up at various areas in the façade, enabling a safe escape for endangered people.
There is no further risk by possible gusts of wind during the transport, not even in sky high areas, as the
evacuation unit runs along the vertical system profiles close to the façade, like an elevator outside of the
building. There are no comparable evacuation units with such security standards offered worldwide.
A world patent from Vienna sets new standards in modern glass architecture
iku®windows, with its headquarters in Vienna, is rolling out into the world market with an invention as
simple as it is genius - intelligent glass facades with integrated self-cleaning and numerous additional
options. The technology is based on a world patent, which was invented by company founder Julius
Thurnher. Electronically controlled wipers with automatic water supply are enabling the cleaning of large
façade surfaces at the touch of a button. Benefits: Apart from enormous time saving the systems
convince by usability, security and cost effectiveness. It pays for itself soon with long term low running
costs. Also facades that are difficult to access, can be cleaned easily. The newly developed maintenance
and evacuation units are already applied for patent.
